The new port is incredibly successful.

Ships arrive constantly.

Trade explodes.

Then the visitors begin bringing armed ships to "protect" the trade.

Soon they control the harbor.

Then they begin deciding who is allowed to trade there.

Your city is richer.

But you're no longer completely in charge of it.

Portugal created a network of fortified ports and trading posts throughout parts of Africa and Asia.

Controlling ports allowed the Portuguese to influence trade without needing to conquer huge areas of land.

You traded political control for economic growth.
